Diplomatic sources on Greece’s UN vote regarding ICJ on Gaza: Greece remains committed to international law and justice
Diplomatic sources explained Greece’s vote on the UN General Assembly’s draft resolution on the adoption of a new opinion by the International Court of Justice in The Hague. In particular, they stressed that the vote on the draft resolution requesting an opinion from the International Court of Justice highlights once again the urgent need to address the unprecedented crisis taking place in the Middle East.
The same sources point out that Greece remains committed to international law and international justice, adding that a few days ago, on 11 December, at the 10th Special Session of the General Assembly, Greece voted in favor of the two resolutions in support of UNRWA’s mandate, as well as the demand for a ceasefire in Gaza.
We believe that we should give time to the parties involved, the same diplomatic sources said, as well as the international community to follow up on the aforementioned resolutions and become active towards addressing the issues raised.
“For this reason, although we share the concerns raised in the draft, we will abstain. Greece, as a country in the region but also as an elected member of the UN Security Council from 1.1.2025, remains ready to assist any peace effort that contributes to the promotion of much-needed stability and prosperity in the region,” the same diplomatic sources added.
