Four tax office employees and an accountant were arrested during a police operation underway on the island of Corfu to break up a corruption ring, it was revealed on Friday.
The arrests were carried out on the basis of a case file prepared by Internal Affairs, in collaboration with the Independent Authority for Public Revenues (AADE).
Police said that raids on the suspects’ houses were now underway.
Sources in the police force said that tax office employees had used the accountant to approach tax-payers who either owed large amounts of tax or who were due to have large sums returned to them, demanding significant sums to provide them with services and facilitations.
The suspects under arrest will appear before a prosecutor.
