The high temperatures and high-velocity summer winds (meltemia) forecast for the next three days raise the threat for fires in four main areas of Greece, Climate Crisis & Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Thursday, calling for caution.
Reviewing the threat conditions, on Thursday, were a meeting chaired by Kikilias with local government officials and climate protection agencies and one held earlier by the Threat-Assessment Committee, which announced the high likelihood of fires in specific areas over the next three days.
According to the Ministry’s Daily Fire Risk Map for Friday, the areas with a high risk of fire (Category 4 on a scale of 1 to 5) include the following:
– Region of Attica
– Region of Central Greece (Regional Units of Viotia, Evia island) and
– Region of the North Aegean (Regional Units of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria).
The meltemia winds will begin on Friday reaching a maximum velocity of 7 on the Beaufort scale throughout the weekend.
