Culture Minister Lina Mendoni and the general director of the Acropolis Museum Nikos Stampolidis on Monday received Princess Kako of Akishino, a member of the Japanese imperial family, and showed her around the Acropolis Museum.

The princess showed a special interest in the sculptural decoration of the Parthenon, asking to learn in detail how the statues were sculpted.

At noon, Princess Kako will be welcomed at the National Gallery by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexandra Papadopoulou, for a ceremony to celebrate the Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism and the 125th anniversary since Greece and Japan established diplomatic relations, which coincides with Princess Kako’s visit.

The declaration of the year 2024 as the Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism was agreed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in January 2023, during the official visit of the Greek Prime Minister to Japan.

The princess’s programme includes visits to many other places of cultural interest, including the Panathenaic Stadium, the Holy Monastery of Agia Faneromeni in Salamis and the Museum of Asian Art in Corfu.
