The tragic outcome itself showed that police officers at Agii Anargyri should have done much more than they did, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said during the daily press briefing on Thursday, regarding the murder of a 28-year-old woman outside the police station where she had sought protection from an estranged former partner.

While there could be no excuses for everything that had led to the murder, he added, assigning responsibility and blame was the sole province of justice and those responsible for conducting the investigation, while stressing that the full truth will be revealed and that an assessment carried out so that such events are not repeated.

He pointed out that the culprit was already in the hands of justice, while the police officers suspected of actions and omissions that led to the murder had been suspended from their positions pending investigation. Marinakis also referred to the actions taken by the government to prevent crime and assist victims of domestic abuse, saying it would be unfair to “cancel the efforts” made in this direction by police and the government, listing the actions taken. Among these, he referred to some 18 operational bureaus handling domestic abuse cases, the ‘Panic Button’, the SOS phone line and others.

“The crime of homicide, in which women are victims that die at the hands of men simply because they are women, which has rightly been dubbed socially as femicide, is one of the most serious issues that we are called on to face. I want to give assurances on the part of the government that we are fighting the hardest battle to uproot established attitudes and dysfunctionalities. With persistence and dedication we will attempt to achieve this,” Marinakis said.
The spokesperson also referred to the installation of cash register-POS interfaces, saying that 90 pct of businesses had either already installed or had an appointment to install the necessary hardware, fines for unfair profiteering imposed on 13 businesses and cited figures from ELSTAT regarding income and the risk of poverty, noting that Greece had succeeded in achieving “high growth, higher wages and lower unemployment without increasing inequality,” among other issues.
He concluded by announcing that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will address the 15th New Democracy Congress on Friday at 19:00.
