Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday concluded his first visit to Estonia, which coincided with the centennial since Greece and Estonia first established diplomatic relations. In meetings with Estonia’s President Alar Karis, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Juri Ratas, the prime minister confirmed the very good level of bilateral relations, government sources said.

As discussed in his meeting with Kallas, there was agreement on the potential for deepening relations further, especially in the fields of economic and investment cooperation and in areas such as digital transformation – where the two countries already cooperate – and in cyber security, an area in which Estonia excels.

The premier’s talks in Tallinn also emphasised the issue of energy and the energy crisis, as well as the green transition, with Mitsotakis stressing the need for common European solutions to deal with the energy crisis and excessive energy price fluctuations as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He said that the EU and its member-states must continue to support Ukraine until it regains its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The prime minister also highlighted the need for a firm front against revisionism and in support of a commitment to international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, which he emphasised was non-negotiable.

Mitsotakis briefed Estonian officials on the latest developments regarding Turkey’s aggressive behaviour and the Turkish leadership’s rhetoric, which undermined stability and security in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, repeating that Greece was in favour of dialogue and understanding but will not accept any dispute of Greek sovereignty.

The two sides also discussed the challenge posed by migration at the EU’s external borders and especially the threat of a weaponisation of migrant flows.
