Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to highlight Greece’s leading role, not only as a pillar of stability and security in the region, but also as a key force for energy security and the diversification of energy sources in the Balkans and Southeast Europe, an issue that becomes even more imperative after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, during the Berlin Process Summit, which will take place in the German chancellery.

According to government sources, Mitsotakis is expected to point out that the regional integration of the Western Balkans is an investment in their security, stability and development and will underline the key role of energy cooperation, especially in today’s geopolitical landscape. It is clear, as pointed out by the Greek government, that Athens firmly supports the European perspective of the Western Balkans.

The prime minister will intervene and speak in a special section regarding energy security and energy transformation, a fact indicative of the importance attributed to Greece’s key role in the region, but also of the recognition of the initiatives it has undertaken with the infrastructure it is developing for the diversification of energy sources and the energy security of the entire region – and has already demonstrated this with the example of Bulgaria, as well as with the operation of the Greek-Bulgarian IGB pipeline.

The Summit, which will also be attended by the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, is expected to ratify the declaration on energy security and the green transition in the Western Balkans.
