The ground distortion near the epicenter of the large earthquake on Crete on Monday reached 14cm, the National Observatory of Athens announced on Thursday.
The Observatory’s Center of Earth Observation and Satellite Remote Sensing (Beyond) based its calculation on data from the European satellite Sentinel-1 on Arkalochori, SE Crete, where the earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck on September 27. It had a depth of 10.4km and its epicenter was 1km SE of Arkalochori, the Observatory’s Geodynamic Institute said. Seismic activity has continued so far.
The distortion will be confirmed within the next few days with new calculations.
