Event in Strasbourg celebrates start of Greek chairmanship at CoE Council of Ministers

Greece’s six-month chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe was celebrated at an event on Thursday that included the inauguration of a special train stopping by all international organizations based in Strasbourg.

Officials attending gathered near the city hall building in the Place Broglie, Strasbourg’s main square, where a Greek flag was raised and the national anthem played.

Attending were permanent representative of Greece to the Council of Europe Panos Beglitis, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Mayor of Strasbourg Roland Ries and Alternate Mayor for International and European Relations Nawel Rafik-Elmrini. Ambassador Irakli Giviashvili represented the outgoing Georgian chairmanship.

Ambassador Beglitis said the Greek chairmanship will focus on several issues: youth, the protection of children in vulnerable situations, the protection of social rights during times of crisis and the protection of cultural heritage against environmental dangers. “We have also decided to face the crisis in terms of innovation, developing and using digital means to the greatest degree possible. We have chosen the applicaiton of new technologies to organize events and disseminate them,” he said.
