The second round of elections to elect mayors and regional governors is taking place throughout Greece on Sunday, one week after European elections and the first round of local government polls.
The election in the second round is between the two candidates that got the highest number of votes in the first round. In cases where a candidate received more than half the vote in the first round, the election is not repeated.
With the issue decided in six regions and 103 municipalities during the first round, the electorate must now choose seven regional governors and 229 mayors.
In Athens the fight is between ND’s Kostas Bakoyannis, who came close to an absolute majority of 42.65 pct on the first Sunday, and SYRIZA-supported candidate Nasos Iliopoulos, who got 16.98 pct on May 26. In Thessaloniki, both candidates come from ND’s ranks, with Nikos Tachiaos being the party’s official choice and Konstantinos Zervas standing as an independent.
