Gavroglou: New hiring system for teachers is based on equal and fair terms

“We are obliged to propose a system that is balanced and fair”, Education, Research and Religious Affairs Minister, Costas Gavroglou, said on Friday to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency’s (ANA) radio station “104.9 FM”, regarding the new system for the hiring of primary and secondary school teachers, introduced by legislation passed late on Thursday.

“The Constitution clearly states that all citizens have a right to have access to the profession on the basis of merit. All constitutionalists tell us that there must be balanced criteria, combining experience with scientific criteria,” he explained.

The teachers’ unions are complaining that the new hiring system is unfairly weighted against teachers who have worked for years on short-term contracts.
