Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Antonis Samaras, Prime Minister of Greece

The Secretary-General met today (Friday) with H.E. Mr. Antonis Samaras, Prime Minister of Greece.  The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister exchanged views on the global economic crisis and, in particular, its impact on Greece.

They discussed preparations for the resumption, in the fall, of negotiations to reach a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus as well as prospects for resolution of the “name” issue between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.  The Secretary-General expressed the hope that both issues would be resolved soon.  The interlocutors also discussed the crisis and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria.

The Secretary-General briefed the Prime Minister on ongoing discussions with Member States on the development of a post-2015 development agenda, including the formulation of Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing that this constitutes a major priority for the United Nations. They both expressed concern about international terrorism and discussed means of reducing the threat.
