President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides has been invited to meet U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, according to Hellas Journal sources.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday in the Oval Office.

It comes a few days after the first round of talks on the strategic dialogue between Cyprus and the USA in Nicosia this week and a few months after the signing of a defense agreement with the Pentagon.

The invitation reflects the growing importance of Cyprus to the United States and the upgraded strategic role of the island.

The last time a Cyprus president was invited to the White House was in 1996 when President Glafkos Clerides held a meeting with then US President Bill Clinton.
