Protected status of two Novartis case witnesses rescinded

A decision by Greece’s Finance Prosecution department on Thursday has rescinded the protected status afforded to two witnesses whose evidence had implicated senior Greek political figures in the Novartis case, including their immunity from prosecution.

According to sources, the two witnesses will no longer have the protection status granted them by the Corruption Prosecutor of that time, while their designation as “public interest witnesses” is also revoked. In the Novartis case, they had been identified by the code-names ‘Aikaterini Kelesi’ and ‘Maximos Sarafis’.
The end of their immunity from prosecution now permits individuals who were named in their testimony to have legal recourse against them. Among those who had called for the lifting of their protected status were former prime minister Antonis Samaras, New Democracy minister Adonis Georgiadis, former minister Andreas Loverdos and Bank of Greece governor Yannis Stournaras. They were all among individuals investigated by the then corruption prosecutor on the basis of their testimony.
