The government will introduce a bill on state funding for parties that will resolve the issue of suspension of funding for the Spartiates party, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said in an interview to national broadcaster ERT on Wednesday.

Asked about it after a related amendment PASOK introduced in Parliament on Tuesday, Marinakis said that Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios will introduce a relevant bill in Parliament “in a reasonable amount of time” from now.

He also explained that there are two different subsidies to parties: one for national elections, and a regular one to fund parties. Spartiates should not have received the one for European elections, Marinakis said, adding it was disingenious for the two parties to criticize ruling New Democracy for not approving Tuesday’s proposal, as SYRIZA had allowed the Euroelection funding with an amendment in 2019, while PASOK had supported it at the time.
