The Second South Florida Greek Film Festival, from October 11 to 20: This year’s lineup features box office hits and critically acclaimed films, representing the best of Greek cinema in 2024




The Hellenic Cultural Society of South Florida proudly presents the Second South Florida Greek Film Festival, taking place from October 11 to 20.

Screenings of the latest Greek films will be held at the historic Savor Cinema in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale, Kandaras Hall, and the Bill Cosford Cinema in Miami.

The festival will showcase eight feature films, four shorts, and three documentaries. All films have English subtitles. Thanos Tokakis, one of Greece’s most renowned character actors and a two-time winner of the Hellenic Film Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, will be a special guest on opening night (October 11). As the lead actor in the opening film, he will participate in a Q&A session after the screening. The evening will include a red carpet event, Kleos Mastiha cocktails, and a reception catered by Souvlaki GR following the screening.

The South Florida Greek Film Festival is held under the auspices of the Greek Consulate in Tampa, with support from author Theodore Pitsios, Souvlaki GR, anonymous donors, and the dedication of volunteers.

ANIMAL

Florida Premiere. An aging, modestly talented entertainer realizes that it is time to give up her career. Directed by Sofia Exarchou. Seven 2023 Hellenic Film Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress. Winner Golden Alexander 64th TIFF.

MURDERESS

Florida Premiere. An adaptation of the 1903 acclaimed novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis. Box office hit. Despair over women’s oppressive living conditions in her island community circa 1900 drives her to find a violent solution to confront the evils of a male-dominated society. Directed by Eva Nathena. Nominated for Sixteen 2024 Hellenic Film Academy Award nominations.

THE LAST TAXI DRIVER

Florida Premiere. The suicide of a customer prompts a taxi driver to attempt to change his dead-end life. Directed by Stergios Paschos. Five 2024 Hellenic Film Academy Award nominations.

LITTLE THINGS THAT WENT WRONG

(Opening Night Screening) – Florida Premiere. Two fathers from opposite ends of the social scale come together in a situation that captures the desperation lurking in each man’s psyche. Directed by Haris Vafeiadis. Nominated for five Hellenic Film Academy Awards.  Opening night screening followed by audience Q&A with protagonist Thanos Tokakis.

THE PROMOTION

South Florida Premiere. A trip becomes the occasion for a father and his adult son to sharpen their connection through cathartic healing. Directed by Periklis Choursoglou. 2024 Hellenic Film Academy Award: Best Supporting Actor.

BEHIND THE HAYSTACKS

Directed by Asimina Proedrou. Won six awards at the 63rd Thessaloniki International Film Festival (including the Fipresci Award). Best Debut Feature Award at the 53rd International Film Festival of India. Nominated at the 2023 Galway film Fleadh International Competiton. 10 awards at the Greek Film Academy including Best Film Award. A tragic incident strikes the family of a middle-aged fisherman, pushing them to face their own personal impasses and weaknesses, whilst having to consider, for the first time in their life, the price to pay for their actions.

MY PEOPLE

Directed by Anna Rezan. The story of the Greek Jews during the Holocaust, the Axis occupation, the resistance, the role of the Christian clergy; a hymn to love and courage as it is discovered by a young woman in her quest to uncover her Greek Jewish family’s history.

IN A FISHBOWL

Directed by Fragkoulis. Fotini, a young woman awakens with amnesia after a devastating car accident. Transported to a remote mansion on the Greek island of Samos, Fotini’s journey to recover her memories takes a sinister turn as she becomes ensnared in a web of deception and manipulation.
