At least 163 migrants rounded up in 24 hours in three separate incidents

Three different incidents involving irregular migrants occurred in the last 24 hours, while a woman was recovered dead from the sea around the island of Kos.

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, a woman was recovered dead southeast of Kos after a boat carrying 16 migrants capsized, while the remaining 15 people were rescued by a coast guard vessel and transported to the island’s port.
Also a wooden boat with 78 people on board was located in the sea about 23 nautical miles south of Gavdos. The migrants were picked up by a lifeboat and are to be transferred to the port of Souda in Chania.
In addition, a sailing boat with 70 migrants was spotted to the east of the Messinian Gulf. The people were picked up by a Panamanian-flagged ship with the participation of a Coast Guard vessel and will be transferred to the port of Kalamata. All operations were conducted under the coordination of the Coast Guard’s Joint Search and Rescue Center.
According to data from the Hellenic Coast Guard, in August 2024, 2,840 migrants were arrested for illegal entry into Greece, of whom 19 were in Greek territory and bound for an EU country.
