Athens Police directorate bans two open rallies on Sunday morning

The Athens Police directorate banned two open rallies at 10:30 and 12:00 at Syntagma Square on Sunday, it announced on Friday.

Rallies were scheduled by members of the movement “Constitutional National Assembly/Direct Democracy (12:00) and members of the “Community of Special Forces Reserves” (pre-rally, at 10:30).

Police said the ban is in effect from 06:00 on Sunday to 06:00 on Monday in the areas around Syntagma Square, Alexandras and Messoghion Avenues, Michalakopoulou and Ilia Iliou, Syngrou, Pireos, Plateia Karaiskaki, among others.

The ban is issued “because on one hand the organizers did not notify authorities of their intention to invite the greater public to attend, and on the other because their meetings pose significant danger to public safety and seriously threaten the social and economic life in the specific area, the circulation of vehicles and pedestrians, the function of infrastructure and social benefit facilities at their point of meeting,” police said.
