The fire that started in Varnavas, Attica at 15:00 on Sunday continued to rage as darkness approached, moving rapidly in the ravines. According to the fire brigade, the flames were advancing toward the east of Stamata, amid winds of over 7 Beaufort that constantly changed direction.

The strong winds were greatly hampering the work of the 26 fire-fighting aircraft participating in the operation, with the fight against the fire expected to last through the night as the winds will continue to be very strong.

The fire-fighting force was increased to 315 fire fighters with 10 teams of forest commandos and 98 vehicles, as well as a large number of volunteers. Among their number are 33 fire-fighters and five vehicles from Roman and 10 fire-fighters with two vehicles from Moldova. There were also 15 fire-fighting airplanes and 11 helicopters, of which two were being used for coordination.

Their efforts were being assisted by digging machinery and water trucks from the Attica Region and the Armed Forces, while a second ministerial coordination committee on the fire was held a short while earlier.

Following the evacuation warning for Stamata, messages to evacuate were sent to Grammatiko, telling people to leave in the direction of Marathonas, to Rodopoli and Amygdaleza, instructing them to head toward Kifissia, and Mikrochori in Oropos, instructing people to move in the direction of Kapandriti and Afidnes via the national highway.
