Appeal trial for deadly Mati fire opens in Athens

The appeal trial for the deadly fire in Mati in 2018 opened at the misdemeanors appeals court of Athens on Monday with 7 of the 21 defendants represented by their lawyers.

Absent were the then chief and deputy chief of the Fire Department and the then governor of Attica Region.
The proceedings continued with statements from relatives of the fire victims, followed by testimonies of those injured in the fire, including individuals with injuries and burns.
The court will appoint a defense lawyer for the then head of the Unified Operations Coordination Center, Ioannis Fostieris, who was tried in the first instance court without a lawyer, as allowed by misdemeanor charges at the time. However, code amendments now require the court to appoint a lawyer in such cases, to prevent invalidation issues.
Earlier, the president read out the names of dozens of witnesses who will be called to testify about the fire that left behind 102 dead and 32 seriously injured.
The trial will continue on Tuesday
