Senior diplomatic source notes low expectations for the Cyprus trilateral amid elections in the occupied areas

According to a senior diplomatic source, there was communication between the foreign ministers of Greece and Türkiye before the cancellation of the meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“It was difficult to reschedule because the schedules were very tight,” the same source said. “Whether there is an issue of tension from the other side remains to be seen,” he noted.

On the Greece-Cyprus-Syria trilateral, he said that “for us, Syria, as well as Libya, are two major chapters. The next steps have been defined, and a joint committee among the three countries will be appointed to promote our issues.”

On the electrical interconnection, the same source noted that “the project will go ahead; there are some procedural gaps that will be resolved. The agreement has been reached.

On the Cyprus issue, the same source said that “we are in a phase of dynamic evolution. We have managed, in the last two years, to make the Cyprus issue a priority for the UN Secretary-General, apart from the wars.” Regarding the upcoming trilateral meeting, he said that “we do not expect much, in view of the elections in the occupied territories.”
“There is a sense that the Cyprus issue has been placed on a solid track. Let us remember that four years ago, they said they would sit at the table only if sovereign equality was recognised. They have now sat at the table at the UN headquarters and are discussing the issue within the UN framework,” the source noted.
