Mitsotakis to participate in the Third UN Ocean Conference convened in Nice, France

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is traveling to Nice, France, where the 3rd UN Ocean Conference will take place on Sunday, June 8 and Monday, June 9.

According to government officials, the Prime Minister is expected to underline the importance that Greece attaches to the protection of the oceans and seas and the important measures it has taken to take action against the multiple crises facing the seas and oceans, and to emphasize that Greece is moving rapidly towards sustainable and responsible management of its marine resources.

It should be noted that in April 2024, Athens organized the 9th Our Ocean Conference, during which over 471 new commitments were achieved -21 new commitments from Greece- for the protection of the oceans amounting to 11 billion dollars. Among the commitments undertaken by Greece is the creation of two National Marine Parks, in the Ionian and Aegean Seas, in order to increase the size of its marine protected areas to 30% of its territorial waters.

Mitsotakis is also expected to highlight the issue of maritime security, a top priority of Greece’s term as an elected member of the UN Security Council (2025-2026), and the subject of the high-level discussion at the UN Security Council, which the Prime Minister chaired on May 20 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In Nice, the Prime Minister will outline Greece’s new priorities in relation to the seas and oceans.

Mitsotakis will also participate in the Summit organized by Emmanuel Macron on the Sidelines of UNOC3 “For a more Connected Mediterranean” on collaborations and investments in connectivity projects in the Mediterranean.
