EU Commissioner for migration due in Greece on Tuesday; meetings with PM, Gerapetritis and Plevris
European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner is to visit Greece on Tuesday to discussion border management and migration issues, according to a European Commission announcement.
While in Athens, he is to meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris to discuss the latest developments in the implementation of the Pact, more efficient returns and border management. The Commissioner will also discuss current challenges in the Middle East and Libya.
The European Commission is concerned about the increase in irregular migration from Libya, an issue discussed at the European Council the previous week. The Commission considers that this is a problem that must be resolved with the government and authorities of that country in order to combat “the trafficking rings exploiting people’s despair,” Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert commented.
Lammert did not release any further information regarding Brunner’s planned visit to Libya with the relevant ministers of Greece, Italy and Malta, saying only that the Commission was working on the planning of the visit.
