Mitsotakis to address UN meeting on maritime security
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his address at the United Nations Security Council high-level debate on maritime security on Tuesday, is expected to refer to asymmetric threats such as smuggling, terrorism, piracy, hybrid attacks, as well as climate change.
He will underline the need to address illegal practices that endanger global trade and the marine environment, while making special reference to practices such as the circumvention of sanctions. He will speak about the situation in the Red Sea and the importance of collective action in such cases, while highlighting the leading role that Greece has taken in operation ASPIDES, as well as in ATALANTA and IRINI.
Mitsotakis will stress that the freedom of electricity and data connectivity through submarine cables is non-negotiable and is a prerequisite for the diversification, high quality and affordability of energy and technology. The prime minister will also highlight the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as a basis for global governance at sea in order to address current and emerging threats, as well as the need to respect it.
