Greece receives 623 Blue Flags for its beaches: Second place among 52 countries
Greece holds second place among 52 countries in the 2025 Blue Flag list, with 623 of its beaches awarded the coveted designation in the country.
This continues the steadily upward trend in Greece, with a higher number of locations awarded every year and again exceeding 600 in total, with Greece boasting 15 percent of the internationally awarded blue flag beaches.
The Halkidiki peninsula ranked first among Greek regional units with 93 blue flags, while the island of Crete continued to rank first among Greek regions with 153 blue flags. The International Committee awarded 4,302 beaches, 736 marinas and 158 tourism boats worldwide.
The official announcement of the awarded beaches, marinas and tourism boats of Greece was held in the presence of Environment and Energy Ministry Stavros Papastavrou, by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, the national agency of the international “Blue Flag” programme in Greece, at the Glyfada Golf Gardens on Thursday.
The Blue Flag is the world’s most widely recognised and widespread symbol of environmental quality. It has been awarded since 1987 to beaches and marinas that meet the strict criteria for the award. A prerequisite for a coast to be awarded with a “Blue Flag” is that the water quality of the coast must be “Excellent”. No other quality classification, even “Good”, is acceptable to the Programme. The award is valid for one year.
