Presidential Decree on EEZ declaration in the Ionian sea published
The Presidential Decree declaring the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Hellenic Republic in the maritime area of the Ionian sea, the Ionian islands, and up to cape Taenaro in the Peloponnese was published in the Government Gazette, just hours after the official presentation of Greece’s Maritime Spatial Plan.
The decree formalises the incorporation of the Greece-Italy agreement signed on 9 June 2020, which entered into force in November 2021.
The decree also underscores that the Hellenic Republic reserves the right to exercise, with regard to the rest of its coastline, its corresponding rights under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982.
The agreement between the two countries is grounded in the UN Convention and reaffirms Greece’s longstanding position on the entitlement of islands to maritime zones, including the EEZ and continental shelf.
