Mitsotakis at the European People’s Party conference in Valencia: European challenges in focus

Prime Minister and New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis will take part in the European People’s Party conference in Valencia, Spain, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The conference will elect the leadership of the European centre-right for the next three years, at a critical juncture for the European Union in the new geopolitical and economic environment.

According to sources, the conference is expected to focus on European challenges, such as collective security and defense, competitiveness and the protection of democratic institutions, at a time when the EU aspires, following the presentation of the ReArm program, to proceed with the implementation of its strategy for strengthening European deterrence capabilities and the European defense industry. Greece has played a leading role in the consultations for the preparation of the EU plan, especially in the proposal for fiscal flexibility.

On the sidelines of the conference, Mitsotakis will have meetings, among others, with the elected Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, the Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, and the Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, while the Deputy Prime Minister, Kostis Hatzidakis, is running for one of the positions of vice-president of the EPP.

According to government officials, the Prime Minister’s European and reform agenda, the political stability in Greece in contrast to other European countries, combined with the candidacy of Kostis Hatzidakis, reflect the strong position that ND has in the EPP, and by extension Greece’s upgraded role in shaping European decisions, especially in an environment of challenges, where policies are being shaped that will profoundly affect the future of the EU.
