Marinakis: Greece submits a request to exclude defense spending from fiscal targets
“The Greek government, through the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, is submitting to the competent European institutions a request for the activation of the escape clause and the exclusion of defense spending from the budgetary targets,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said on Tuesday during the press briefing.
“This exception is expected to create fiscal space of around 500 million euros in 2026. This is a significant move, which was a proposal by the Prime Minister himself and, if accepted, will allow this additional fiscal space to be allocated to spending in favor of citizens,” he stressed.
“We have committed and are putting it into practice that the more money the state saves will be translated into moves that will have a substantially positive and direct impact on citizens.”
He also pointed out that immediately after the cabinet meeting on Monday, the contracts relating to the restoration projects in the railway network of the regions of Thessaly and Central Greece from the extensive damage caused by the Daniel and Elias natural disasters in September 2023 were signed at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. He stressed that a tight 15-month timetable is foreseen for their completion as their implementation begins immediately, while he referred to the first test routes with the ECTS automatic braking system.
