Easter getaway underway; shoppers prepare for holiday closures
The Traffic Police have been on high alert since early Good Friday morning to facilitate traffic flow on major roads, as most Easter excursionists begin their departure from urban centres towards the countryside for the holiday.
According to police data, from 6 am on Holy Thursday to 6 am on Good Friday, 73,511 vehicles passed through the Athens-Corinth National Road and 53,680 through the Athens-Lamia National Road, totalling 127,191 cars. During the same period last year, the total number was 119,896 vehicles (70,588 via Athens-Corinth and 49,308 via Athens-Lamia).
It is also recalled that on Good Friday, the movement of trucks with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tons is prohibited in the outbound direction of the highways, from 06:00 to 16:00.
Consumers will be able to make their final purchases on Good Friday and Holy Saturday before the two-day Easter holiday.
Shoppers are advised to check the opening hours of department stores, supermarkets, and chain stores they plan to visit, as they may have extended hours. All stores will remain closed on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, which are public holidays.
