PM Mitsotakis meets with UAE president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Thursday in Abu Dhabi with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for talks focusing on bilateral economic relations and on international and regional developments, particularly Syria.

“With the President of the UAE, the depth of the strategic relationship between the two countries was confirmed. We found with great satisfaction that the goal we had set a few years ago for direct foreign investments of 4 billion euros from the UAE to our country has been exceeded,” said Mitsotakis. “We have set the framework for further strengthening our economic relations. I had the opportunity again to present the overall progress of the Greek economy and the new important investment opportunities that are being launched in our country,” he added.

He also noted that they had the opportunity for an overall review of geopolitical developments in the wider region and a discussion on the significant challenges and opportunities created by the revolution in Artificial Intelligence. “The UAE is a country that had invested a lot in this sector. I had the opportunity to present to the president the important opportunities and possibilities that our country offers for investments in AI infrastructure,” Mitsotakis said.

The prime minister noted that he had the opportunity to invite the UAE president to visit Greece again soon, “so that we can once again reaffirm this extremely close geostrategic relationship that we have developed between our two countries”.

Government sources said that the excellent level of bilateral relations and investment and economic cooperation was confirmed during the meeting, with investments having already exceeded the target of 4 billion euros set in the Strategic Investment Cooperation Agreement in 2022 between the Hellenic Development Bank, the Hellenic Development Investment Bank and the sovereign wealth fund ADQ of the United Arab Emirates.

The two leaders discussed further prospects for investment cooperation with an emphasis on the opportunities opening up in the fields of digital technology, artificial intelligence and data centres.

The prime minister underlined that Greece is one of the seven EU countries that have been selected to build one of the AI Factories and has a dynamic ecosystem of start-ups in this field. He also emphasised its strategic position as an economic and energy bridge between India, the Middle East and Europe.

They additionally discussed closer cooperation in energy, especially renewable energy sources, and in connectivity, as well as tourism and agri-food products.
