International tender for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the Ionian Sea
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, announced on Monday the international tender for the granting of hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation rights in the marine areas “A2” and “South of the Peloponnese”, in the southern Ionian Sea.
The announcement follows the acceptance of the relevant expression of interest for the above areas by the companies Chevron and HELLENiQ Energy.
The tender submission period will last 90 days from the date of publication of the notice in the Official Journal of the European Union.
It is noted that the tender process has already begun, as Skylakakis signed a Decision on January 21, which specifies the exact boundaries of the marine areas, for which the said right to explore and exploit hydrocarbons is granted.
The minister stated: “This is a very important development for our country’s energy security, as the effort is being strengthened to explore the existence of significant natural gas deposits, which is the transitional fuel for the energy transition, a field in which Greece is a pioneer. Furthermore, the interest of giant companies in the hydrocarbon sector – first ExxonMobil and now Chevron – demonstrates the fact that our country is developing into an attractive destination for significant energy investments.”
