Marinakis: Chevron’s interest demonstrates Greece can play a leading role in the global energy market

The contract between the Greek State and the Onassis Foundation for the creation of a network of Onassis Public Schools, as well as Chevron’s interest in potential Greek oil and gas fields, dominated a press briefing by government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis on Monday.

He said that the Onassis network will include 22 schools – 11 high schools and 11 lyceums – “which will operate in areas of the country facing social and economic challenges and will provide thousands of students with the equipment, knowledge and environment they need to develop their skills.”

He also referred to Chevron’s interest in Greece: “Chevron’s interest, combined with the fact that Exxon Mobil is already active in our country, marks the simultaneous presence of two energy giants and reinforces the belief that Greece can play a leading role in the global energy market. It confirms that our country is an attractive investment destination and is another practical recognition of the Greek government’s strategy.”

“The environment and energy ministry accepts the company’s expression of interest and will issue the relevant decision this week, which will make provision for the precise area and the immediate announcement of an international tender, while in the immediate future the spatial expansion of the fossil fuel exploration will also be evaluated. At the same time, the Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Resources Management Company is submitting today the relevant Strategic Environmental Impact Study,” Marinakis underlined.
