Greece bracing for a wave of bad weather on Sunday and Monday
As Greek emergency services prepared for a bout of bad weather expected to begin on Sunday, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias on Saturday urged the public to take all necessary precautions and follow the instructions of the authorities.
Emerging from a meeting of the scientific Risk Assessment Committee of the civil protection service, Kikilias announced that a deterioration of the weather was forecast from Sunday and on Monday, including snowfall in Western Macedonia and possibly in other parts of northern Greece, including Western Thessaly and the mountains of the Peloponnese.
He also warned of strong rain and storms over the Ionian islands, especially Corfu, along the coast of Epirus and Western Greece, in north Evia and possibly the islands of the northeast Aegean, together with winds of 8-9 Beaufort in the Aegean and 7-8 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea.
“We recommend that everyone exercises caution. Firstly, by having snow chains and snow tyres where they are needed and following the instructions of the traffic police, Hellenic Police and other security forces,” he said.
Kikilias said that there will be a deployment of civil protection forces, the fire brigade, the police, the coast guard, the armed forces, both levels of local government and volunteers, while urging the public to follow the instructions of the authorities.
He then attended an interministeral meeting with the participation of the heads of the security forces, armed forces and Greek regions expected to have bad weather, as well as motorway concessionaires.
