Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Monday that he feels  “particularly supported” following a meeting of the National Council, which convened ahead of a dinner he will have  with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in New York city, on October 15th.

He stressed that the aim is none other than to have a positive result which will create the conditions for the resumption of the talks, within the agreed framework.

Speaking to the press before the opening of an exhibition of sculptor Phillipos Yiapanis in Limassol, the President said that the meeting of the National Council was held in a very constructive atmosphere, with absolute respect to different approaches.

He said the discussion was very productive and constructive and he will go to New York more strengthened for this crucial meeting.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.

The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Columbia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
