Motorists returning home after the long weekend on Monday evening can expect long delays on the Athens-Lamia motorway, where a 10-kilometre line of cars formed at the 198th kilometre due to roadworks to repair a bridge.

The road at that point had been narrowed to a single lane for both directions, creating a huge tailback where cars were only able to inch along.

The only alternative was to come off the motorway onto sideroads but, again, the large volume of cars presented difficulties as there is only one lane for about 20 kilometres, from the Lamia junction to the Molos junction.

Motorists complained that the problems continued even after the 208th kilometre at Anthili, while others noted that they were not warned about the problem at the Mavromantila toll plazas so they might turn off before the Anthili junction and instead found themselves at a virtual standstill, taking more than three hours to cover some 10 km.
