Targeted privatizations benefit both state finances and improve the lives of all citizens, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a media post on Monday.

“On this occasion I would like to highlight that, in the end, targeted privatizations work not simply to the benefit of state finances, but also make life better for all citizens,” Mitsotakis underlined.

He particularly referred to last week’s ratification of the new concession for Attiki Odos roadway, the 11th privatization since the 2023 elections, that will bring to public coffers a total of 7.1 billion euros. As a result, as of Sunday, car drivers on the highway will pay a toll of 2.5 euros instead of 2.8 euros, while all cars or special van transport for the disabled will be exempted from paying tolls, the premier underlined.

In addition, the PM said, tax revenues have risen. With the new concession for Attiki Odos, “the state received a record amount of 3.27 billion euros, which directly reduces public debt by 1.5 percentage points of GDP, while every year it will receive a part of the concessionaire’s revenues.” In the larger picture, “we shall see that every planned action in the privatization sector creates multiplier benefits to economy and society,” Mitsotakis underlined.

He noted that privatizations revenues “mean better services for all: investor participation in ports and regional airports radically improves infrastructure, upgrades tourism services, opens new horizons for every region to the benefit of jobs and local societies.”

In addition, they raise Greece’s credibility abroad, he added. “Our reform initiatives in the banking sector attract new capital and investors, certify the upgrade of our economy, and are implemented to the benefit of Greek taxpayers, who have paid dearly in the recent past for opportunism and experimentation.” More than that, the PM added, the privatization program promotes Greece’s image as a country of reforms, adds reliable infrastructure in regions, “and fewer burdens for younger generations, through the significant reduction of public debt.”
