The summer of 2024 was the warmest ever recorded in Greece, according to the preliminary meteorological data analysed by the scientific team of the Athens National Observatory’s weather service, meteo.gr.

It was a summer marked by extended periods of high temperatures for many days, far exceeding the normal temperatures for the season throughout the country. June and July 2024 were recorded as the warmest on record for Greece, while August was the second warmest after August 2021.

Overall, the summer of 2024 in Greece was the warmest on record, surpassing the average temperature for the period 1991-2020 by +2.9 ° C and exceeding the previous warmest summer, in 2012, by +1 ° C.

Regarding the trend of average summer temperatures in Greece from 1960 to 2024, this shows rise of +2.3 ° C.

In areas of western and northern Greece the average temperature for the summer of 2024 fluctuated by 2-3 ° C (even +4 ° C in some areas) above the average value in the period 1991-2020, while the rest of the country was warmer by 1- 2 ° C. In no part of Greece did the deviation of the average temperature fall below +1.4 ° C. The lowest positive deviations were recorded in the region of the Aegean sea, due to the etesian winds (northerly summer winds).
