Ahead of the UN General Assembly, Athens and Nicosia are coordinating their actions, as always, in view of the emerging developments in the Cyprus issue, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a meeting with the Cyprus President Nikos Cristodoulides on Thursday.

“We will therefore once again be given the opportunity to conduct a comprehensive overview of the open issues at a time when, unfortunately, there is growing concern about the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Greece and Cyprus are two countries that are pillars of stability in a very geopolitically troubled region of the planet. So I would say that, especially at this juncture, our coordination is more essential than ever,” Mitsotakis added.

On his part, the President of the Republic of Cyprus noted the following: “I would like to thank you for the meeting. It is always a great pleasure to be in Athens, especially last night to attend an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion, an event that had a massive turnout and is indicative, if you like, of our common concerns taking into account the multiple challenges we face. We will be together in New York next week, a crucial week. We will continue on the path, which we prove with actions and not words, to create the conditions for the resumption of talks. For us, I have said it many times and I mean it, the current state of affairs is not the solution to the Cyprus problem and I am sure that through the solution of the Cyprus problem and the complete normalisation of Greek-Turkish relations we will contribute even more to what Greece and Cyprus, Cyprus and Greece, prove that they are pillars of security and stability in this area of particular geostrategic importance.”

The meeting of the Greek prime minister with the Cyprus president is in progress.
