There is no way that we will suddenly find ourselves with a huge number of immigrants, Foreign Minister, George Gerapetritis, said in an interview with Open TV.

“Greece ensures that the living conditions of those who are in Greece and have received refugee status are tolerable,” he added.

The measures announced by Germany to limit migration flows “create a breach in relation to the free movement of persons and goods” and “a matter of unity with regard to the Schengen Treaty,” noted Gerapetritis.

For now, as he clarified, we do not have entry restrictions yet, it will only be checks. And it does not concern Greece, as these controls concern land and not air borders.

European Law provides for very specific things, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out. “Once a citizen of a third country has received refugee status, that is, he has received humanitarian aid, then he has the possibility with special travel documents to travel to Europe for 90 days”, he pointed out and added: So, currently Greece, fully respecting all European rules and now having a very structured system for the provision of asylum, it does what the Schengen Treaty requires.

As he underlined, “Germany has its own internal political problems and it also has a very special status, because it provides very high welfare, social welfare to immigrants and this is to its credit. But, we all understand that this could also act as a source of attraction.”
