Four dead, 30 rescued and one reported missing after migrant boat sinks near Samos

A search-and-rescue operation launched after the sinking of a migrant boat near the island of Samos has so far rescued 30 individuals, while the  bodies of four women were recovered dead from the sea, coast guard authorities announced on Tuesday.

Twenty-six individuals believed to have arrived on the boat were found on land. According to the survivors, one more occupant of the boat is still missing.

The boat sank on Monday, just 150 metres off Agios Isidoros in northwest Samos, in adverse weather conditions. A citizen heard voices and notified the Coast Guard.

The search and rescue operation involving the coast guard and nearby ships is continuing on Tuesday to find possible missing persons, while an underwater missions unit is due to arrive to assist in the search.
