The protection of the environment is a responsibility shared by everyone in Greece, President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou said on Thursday on the island of Lesvos, where she is celebrating the feast of the Virgin Mary’s Dormition.

Unfortunately, she said, this year’s feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary was overshadowed by the destructive fires in Attica,” she said after attending the morning liturgy at the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Agiassos, SE Lesvos.

Sakellaropoulou also thanked firefighters, volunteers, and everyone else who helped put out the fire, and expressed the hope damage would be compensated for quickly. “The protection of the environment is a responsibility all of us share,” she underlined.

After the liturgy, the president strolled in the traditional streets of the town and chatted with pilgrims. She then met with local government officials for coffee at the traditional cafe of the village square.

On Wednesday, Sakellaropoulou attended an evening liturgy at the Church of Panagia Glykofiloussa in Petra, on top of a 40-meter-high rock in northern Lesvos.

The president is on Lesvos for a short holiday stay that will conclude on Friday.
