Those who have been affected by the catastrophic fire in Attica will be compensated quickly, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday at the village of Sternes Akrotiriou, in the Chania area, where he is celebrating the feast day of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

Mitsotakis thanked firefighters and volunteersm and called for reflection and self-awareness, as well as a recognition that “Greece progresses only  through unity, fighting polarization and toxicity, which does not benefit Greece. The Dormition (August 15) is a feast day of hope to face challenging difficulties.” He said the day was one to celebrate Greece’s Armed Forces, which the government is taking care to strengthen as “a necessary thing in our turbulent times.”

“On the day’s occasion, I would like to thank again all state mechanism officers and all volunteers who fought very difficult battles these last few days with the fires in Attica, and to assure our thankfully few fellow-citizens who sustained damages form the fire, that the state will move with the greatest speed in order to compensate them,” the premier said.

He also expressed the hope that these times of reflection “let us all consider how we can become better, and how we can move ahead in unity to deal successfully again with the great challenges we see coming in the future,” Mitsotakis said, wishing Greeks everywhere his best wishes for the day.
