Ten out of the 44 fires that broke out on Sunday were caused by lightning, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Μinister Vassilis Kikilias said in a post on X.

The minister also asked everyone to be on alert in the coming days as intense lightning activity is expected.

“There were 44 new fires, of which at least 10 were caused by lightning at high altitudes, making it very difficult to extinguish the fire. I would like to thank the firefighters, the volunteers and the local authorities, who once again did their best. Weather phenomena with intense lightning activity are expected in the coming days, we must be alert.”
