An earthquake registering 5.3 on the Richter scale shook Rethymno and Chania prefectures on Crete on Wednesday afternoon, and was felt as far as Heraklion.
The epicenter was 71 km south of Rethymno, in northwest Crete, and southeast of Gavdos island.
No injuries or major damage was reported in the three locations as of this writing, according to Rethymno Civil Protection representative Michalis Sarris and Gavdos Mayor Lilian Stefanaki, both of whom spoke to Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA). Sfakia Mayor Yiannis Zervos said to ANA-MPA that he was informed of cracked walls at the Town Hall and had dispatched an engineer to check.
