PM Mitsotakis arriving at NATO Summit: We must reconfirm our unwavering commitment to allocate at least 2% of our GDP to defense expenditures

The NATO Summit, celebrating the Alliance’s 75th anniversary, takes place at a time of great challenges that include a war in the heart of Europe, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at doorstep statements on Wednesday.

Describing NATO as “the most successful and most resilient defense Alliance in the world,” Mitsotakis said that “we are meeting during a time in which we shall continue to support Ukraine for as long as necessary, in order to ensure that Russia does not win this war of unprovoked aggression.”

The premier added, “It is a time when NATO must face a series of complicated global challenges. It is also the moment when we need to reconfirm our unwavering commitment to allocate at least 2% of our GDP to defense expenditures. This is particularly significant for European countries, not just in terms of achieving this target, but for the rationalization of our defense expenditures in order to further boost the Alliance.”

The PM said that he had been “a consistent support of the greatest unification of European defense expenditures. We do not simply need to spend more, we must be moving more smartly in terms of the way in which we allocate resources in order to enforce our collective defense. The boosting of European defense opportunities is also complementary to NATO’s defense capabilities, it boosts NATO.”
