A total of 54 wildfires have been recorded in the past 24 hours, Fire Brigade spokesperson Vasilis Vathrakogiannis said on Monday.

Of these, 43 have been promptly contained, while firefighting teams are still working to control 11 active blazes.
Efforts are focused on a large fire that started at 3:17 PM on Monday in a forested area near the village of Petries in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri, Evia.

The blaze intensified rapidly due to strong northerly winds. Four messages were sent via the emergency notification system 112, initially to inform residents and subsequently to order evacuations from the villages of Krieza, Koskina and Petries.

189 firefighters, 9 ground teams and 56 vehicles, along with numerous volunteers are operating to extinguish the fires. Additionally, 26 aerial units have been deployed, consisting of 16 aircraft and 10 helicopters.

Vathrakogiannis stressed that support also comes from local municipality water tankers and construction machinery. A firefighting vessel has been dispatched and Coast Guard has mobilized boats near the coastline. Hellenic Police forces are assisting on the ground to facilitate the evacuation of residents.

Mobile Operations Center OLYMPOS is overseeing the coordination of all firefighting efforts. According to Vathrakogiannis, the main front of the fire is within the triangle formed by the villages of Petries, Krieza and Alonia.
Primary focus remains on protecting human life and property. Efforts are also directed at safeguarding the wetland area of Lake Dystos. No damages have been reported so far, according to Vathrakogiannis.
