Wildfire in Koropi area underway; reinforcements sent to put out the blaze

Reinforcements have been sent to contain and put out a fire that was burning in the Koropi area of Attica on Wednesday afternoon, the fire brigade announced. According to the fire brigade, it was a “difficult fire”, in an area where there are scattered residential properties.

The fire originally broke out in grasses off the sideroad of the Vari-Koropi Avenue, in a boat parking yard near the town of Koropi, and then quickly spread. A team of 54 firefighters, with two teams on foot and 19 vehicles, are battling to put out the flames, assisted by four fire-fighting aircraft, six helicopters, volunteers and local authority water tankers.

Warnings have been sent via the 112 emergency number to people in Kitsi and Lambrika near Koropi to evacuate the area, with the former instructed to move toward Vari and the latter toward Agia Marina Avenue.

Police close surrounding roads due to fire in the Koropi area in Attica

The Hellenic Police on Wednesday proceeded to close roads in the vicinity of Vari-Koropi Avenue,  near the location of a wildfire that is burning in the Koropi area in Attica.

Specifically, the following roads have been closed to vehicles:

 

Vari-Koropi Avenue from Agia Marina until Thermopylon roads
Vari-Koropi Avenue and Irakleidon
Vari-Koropi Avenue from Agia Marina Avenue
Vari-Koropi Avenue from Anargyrountos Avenue
Vari-Koropi Avenue from Tsagaraki Road, in lanes leading to Koropi
Vari-Koropi Avenue at the junction with Koropi-Airport Avenue, toward the beach
Also closed are the Attiki Odos exits to Koropi, Agia Marina and Vari.
