In a special ceremony on Friday morning at the Presidential Mansion, President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou decorated composer Yannis Markopoulos (posthumously), lyricist Lefteris Papadopoulos and composer Mimis Plessas with the medal of the Senior Brigadier of the Order of Honour, for their extensive contribution to Greek music.
In her address, Sakellaropoulou expressed her joy at honouring a lyricist and two composers who left their mark on Greek music, not only with their songs but also with their work in the field of symphonic music, jazz, and musical scores for the theatre and cinema.
In particular, the President noted that “song is a bearer of culture and mentality, an expression of experiences, an externalisation of the joy, pain, and passions of an entire people,” and added: “In the great period of its heyday, shortly before and shortly after the dictatorship, it became a high quality artistic product, both lyrically and musically. And although in the decades that followed its spirit, ethos and style gradually began to change, the songs that were written then and pulsed with creative power, freedom and unsurpassed musicality have not been forgotten, nor ever will be.”
The medal awarded to Yannis Markopoulos was received by his daughter, Lena Markopoulou, who thanked Sakellaropoulou for this great honour.
