President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou was on Sunday declared an honorary citizen of Orestiada in northern Greece, where she attended events celebrating the 101st anniversary since the founding of the city.

On her arrival, the president was met by Migration Policy and Asylum Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Orestiada Mayor Diamantis Papadopoulos and the commander of the 4th Army Corps, Lieutenant General Stavros Papastathopoulos and a military honour guard.

She attended a celebratory mass at the Agioi Theodoroi Cathedral led by the Metropolitan of Didymoticho, Orestiada and Soufli Damaskinos.
Later, she laid a wreath at the monument of Metropolitan Polykarpos Varvakis, the founder of Nea Orestiada.

In a speech at the ceremony where she was made honorary citizen, Sakellaropoulou stressed the crucial role of Evros as the border of both Greece and the European Union at a difficult time, with rising tension in two war zones in the surrounding region, and said that “the state will be at your side in every effort to improve infrastructure, security and productivity in your region.”

She referred to the city’s history as a town originally built to house refugees driven from their homes in Turkiye in 1923, as well as the disastrous fire in the Dadia Forest in 2023 and the steps taken to protect the environment in consequence.
