Heatwave continues with highs of 40-plus centigrade on Thursday; cooler on Friday

Temperatures will remain very high throughout Greece on Thursday, in many places exceeding 40C, with only the northwest to see a slight decline, according to an updated weather forecast released by the National Meteorological Service. The highest temperatures will be in eastern parts of the country south of Thessaly, especially those that are not affected by sea breezes.

Showers and possibly storms are forecast in Epirus and Macedonia on Thursday, with maximum temperatures reaching 35-37C in the north. In Thessaly, west Central Greece and the west Peloponnese, the temperature will climb to 39-40C, while temperatures on the mainland in the east will climb to 41-42C, in places even 43C.

On the islands of the Ionian, Sporades and Cyclades, the maximum temperatures are forecast at around 35-37C, on the islands of the eastern Aegean this will rise to 38-40C, while on Crete and the Dodecanese islands, temperatures will hit 39-42C.

A very hot day is also forecast in Attica, where the temperature is forecast to climb to 41-42C in areas far from the coast and between 3-5C lower in coastal areas.

Cooler weather will start to arrive on Friday, initially in the west, central and northern parts of the country, while the north may also experience rain, storms and strong winds. Maximum temperatures will drop to between 33-35C in the north, from 36-37C on the rest of the mainland and up to 38C in the interior of Central Greece and the Peloponnese.

Maximum temperatures on the islands will reach 34-36C and between 37-38C in the Dodecanese islands and Crete.

A return to normal June temperatures throughout the country is forecast on Saturday, accompanied by strong north northwesterly winds.
